Terra Estreita is what you get when a beach is protected by a lagoon, a ferry and a fishing village’s low profile. It sits on Ilha de Tavira — the long barrier island of the Ria Formosa — directly across the lagoon from Santa Luzia, and the only way in is over the water. That short crossing filters out most of the crowd before the day begins.
What waits on the other side is the Sotavento at its simplest: a narrow neck of dunes (the ‘narrow land’ of the name), a wooden walkway over the sand, and an ocean beach running empty in both directions for as far as you care to walk. Facilities are minimal — a seasonal beach support and little else — so bring what you need. The water is the eastern Algarve’s usual argument: warmer and calmer than anything west of Faro.
When to go: summer for swimming, with an eye on the ferry timetable, which follows the season. The crossing is half the photograph anyway — fishing boats, lagoon flats, waders working the low tide.
Who it’s for: anyone staying around Tavira who wants sand without a scene; photographers who like their beaches horizontal — dunes, lagoon and nobody in the frame; people who think a beach day should start by boat. Santa Luzia’s octopus tradition on the return crossing is the correct way to end it.
