Praia da Barra da Fuseta

Fuseta does its beach the Ria Formosa way: the sand you want is across the water. Praia da Barra da Fuseta sits on the barrier island opposite the village, around the inlet, the barra, which lets the Atlantic into the lagoon, and you get there on the small ferry or water taxis that run from the fishing harbour. The crossing takes minutes and is half the fun: working boats, clam rakes, the low white village shrinking behind you.

The island is a strip of dune-backed sand facing open sea, with the channel curling around its end. Ocean side for waves and long walks, inlet side for calmer, warmer water that moves with the tide, and the barra funnels serious current at mid-tide, so swim off the beach, not in the channel. Facilities range from minimal to none depending on the season; this is a bring-your-own-shade beach, which is exactly why it still feels wild ten minutes from a village café.

When to go: summer is when crossings run frequently and the lagoon glows; out of season, check that boats are running at all before you plan around them. Low tide is the photogenic phase: sandbanks, standing water, people wading the shallows.
