Fuseta has two beaches and a lagoon between them. Fuseta-Ria is the one by the village; Fuseta-Mar is the real prize — the ocean side of the barrier island across the water, reached by the small ferry that shuttles from the fishing harbour in season. The crossing takes minutes and does what boat crossings always do: filters the crowd and resets the scenery to sand, sea and sky.

The island beach itself is the Ria Formosa at its simplest — a long blade of pale sand with clear Atlantic water on one side and the lagoon at your back, shell-strewn, flat, and almost entirely free of buildings. Walk a few hundred metres from the ferry landing and you can have a stretch to yourself even in August, which is not something the mainland coast offers.

When to go: summer, for the ferry schedule and the swimming — the water out here is clearer and livelier than inside the lagoon. Out of season the ferry thins or stops and the island effectively closes; check before planning a shoot around it.

Who it’s for: swimmers and snorkellers who want clean water without a cliff hike; photographers working minimal compositions — sand, water, horizon; anyone staying along the Ria Formosa who wants the island experience without committing to the bigger crossings at Olhão.
