Armona is the island for people who think they’ve seen the Algarve’s beaches. The ferry from Olhão drops you into a car-free village of painted holiday cottages — lanes of sand and crushed shell, gates in improbable colours, oleander and agaves against whitewash — and then the island simply opens up: dunes, boardwalk, and a sandbar that runs on until sea, sand and sky stop bothering to separate. No cars, no cliffs, no drama. Just horizontals, which is exactly the point.

In high summer, take an early boat and shoot the cottages before the day-trippers land; the far reaches of the sandbar stay quiet even in August.
Bring what you need — beyond a handful of seasonal cafés the island offers little, and shade is scarce once you leave the village.
