Traditional Portuguese Comfort Food in Monchique at A Charrete

In the heart of Monchique, A Charrete is the kind of traditional restaurant that feels instantly familiar—in the best way. It’s popular with both locals and visitors for straightforward, satisfying Portuguese cooking, a warm welcome, and portions that make you glad you arrived hungry. The vibe is classic and unpretentious: the food is clearly the focus, delivering flavor and comfort rather than fancy plating.

The menu leans into regional favorites and well-loved national dishes, making it a great place to try “proper” Portuguese cooking without overthinking it. Diners often gravitate toward traditional mains like cod and a rich lamb stew—hearty, slow-cooked, and ideal after a day exploring the Serra de Monchique. Seafood lovers are well looked after too, with dishes like monkfish earning strong praise for taste and quality. If you’re in the mood for something deeply savory, the pork cheeks are a standout—tender and full of character, exactly what you hope for from a kitchen that knows its classics.

It’s also a welcoming choice if you have dietary needs. Guests regularly note that there are plenty of options that work well for gluten-free and dairy-free diners, which can be a huge relief when you’re travelling and want to eat local without compromising. Pair your meal with a glass of wine—many people find the wine offering great value and a natural match for the robust flavors coming out of the kitchen.

And then there’s dessert. If you’re deciding whether to save room, the honey pudding makes the case for you. It’s frequently singled out as the kind of sweet ending that turns a good meal into a memorable one—simple, traditional, and seriously moreish.

Service is another reason people return. The team is known for being attentive and genuinely friendly, making guests feel welcome from the moment they sit down. Whether you’re after a relaxed dinner for two or a comforting, local meal in town, A Charrete is a dependable Monchique favorite worth putting on your list.

They serve cans of iced tea for €2, whereas in smaller restaurants it's served in bottles and cheaper... The cook walked across the dining room with a bag of frozen prawns, which I found in my dish, and the veal was tough and overcooked!
