Tucked into the flank of Ponta da Piedade — the headland whose arches and grottoes have their own listing — Praia do Barranco do Martinho is the sand that most visitors to the famous rocks never notice is there. It is a small cove in the same golden limestone, looking out on the same sculpted sea stacks, without the boardwalks or the audience.

Access is the catch: there is no maintained way down, and any path in this terrain should be treated as informal, steep and changeable — check locally before committing to it. The cliffs are unstable and shed rock, and there is no supervision of any kind; many people sensibly see this cove from a kayak or boat instead.

Who it’s for: experienced cove-hunters already working the Piedade headland, and paddlers rounding it from Lagos. For the classic arch views, the headland listing is the one you want.
