April vs May in the Algarve: Choose Your Month Before You Book
Most people pick Algarve dates by price and flight schedule. That works — but if you want the right trip for your style, April and May are two very different products.
The real tradeoff
- April: greener landscapes, stronger spring feel, cooler mornings, bigger weather swings
- May: more stable warmth, longer beach windows, easier evening plans, slightly more crowd pressure
Neither is universally better. The win is matching month to your priority.
Pick April if your goal is movement
April is ideal for travelers who plan to walk every day and care about variation more than heat. You get dramatic light, active vegetation, and usually better comfort for longer routes.
Use April when your week is built around:
- Cliff and inland loop combinations
- Birding and wetland windows
- Sunrise-first schedules
Pick May if your goal is rhythm
May is the stronger choice when you want smoother day structure: beach block, lunch, short walk, sunset, repeat. Water is still fresh but daily conditions are usually easier to predict.
Use May when your week is built around:
- Mixed beach-and-town days
- Shorter scenic walks
- Less decision-making on weather pivots
The practical booking rule
If your group includes both hikers and relaxed beach planners, split the difference: book early May and keep two inland fallback days pre-planned.
Local safety note
Both months can still deliver strong coastal gusts. Treat exposed cliff segments as condition-dependent and keep at least one inland backup route for each coastal day.
