Benagil Cave: The Algarve’s Must-See Sea Cave & Cliff Views

Benagil Cave is one of the most unforgettable natural sights in the Algarve—a dramatic coastal landmark near Lagoa where golden cliffs meet vivid ocean color. Whether you’re admiring it from the clifftop trails or arriving by water, the setting feels cinematic: rugged rock faces, bright light reflecting off the sea, and viewpoints that make you stop in your tracks.

Many visitors love the clifftop perspective, especially on windy or cooler days when being on the water isn’t as appealing. From above, the scenery is spectacular, and there are walking paths that are generally comfortable and easy to follow. You’ll also notice safety barriers along the edges—worth respecting, since the drops can be steep. Even without going inside, the panoramic views of the cliffs and the water alone can make the trip feel completely worthwhile.

If seeing the cave from the inside is on your list, planning matters. Access is typically done by kayak tours or small boat trips departing from nearby Benagil Beach, and in busy periods it’s smart to arrive early. The beach area can get crowded later in the morning, and parking fills up quickly—so giving yourself extra time can be the difference between a smooth visit and a stressful one. Bring water and sun protection, and be ready for a bit of walking, especially if you park higher up.

One important local note: swimming to the cave is not considered a safe way to visit due to constant boat and kayak traffic. Choosing an organized boat tour or a kayak rental keeps your experience both enjoyable and responsible while still delivering those iconic views.

For a half-day adventure with huge payoff, Benagil Cave delivers: incredible photos, refreshing sea air, and a chance to slow down and appreciate the natural beauty that makes this coastline famous.

We did not take the tour option to go in a boat and explore from the inside. It was cold and quite windy so we parked in a lot and walked in. Seeing it from above was magnificent. There is a wodden fence/ barricade telling you not to go past as you could fall, but what you can see is absolutely worth it. Off the to other side and high cliffs with the most beautiful waters. There are quite a few trails to walk, and if in peak season I would recommend the boat/ kayak tour. Would be beautiful to see inside from the water.

Benagil Cave /!\ read before you go /!\ Swimming to Benagil Cave is strictly prohibited because of the constant traffic of boats and kayaks going in and out of the cave. It is unsafe and monitored, so don’t plan to access it by swimming. To visit the cave, your only options are kayak rental or a small boat tour, both available directly at Benagil Beach, just a few meters away. Prices are around 20€ per person for approximately 30 minutes. And 35€ per person for 1h round cave tour, Kayaks are usually self-guided, while boat tours are quick and organized. Parking is a major issue. By 10:00 AM, all nearby parking spots were already full. Expect congestion, especially in high season. There is a paid parking lot for 5€ per day, but it is located on top of the hill, about a 10-minute walk downhill to the beach (and uphill on the way back, which can be tiring in the heat). The beach itself is small and gets very crowded, especially late morning and midday. Arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon is highly recommended. Bring water, sun protection, and be prepared for waiting times for kayaks or boats. Despite the logistics, the cave is beautiful, but planning ahead is essential to avoid frustration.

The Benagil Cave experience was truly unbelievable, with incredibly beautiful views. The combination of the sea, surrounding nature, and soft golden sand creates a unique and unforgettable experience. Even though December is not the peak season, I truly believe it is still well worth visiting. It’s peaceful, relaxing, and perfect for enjoying fresh air and natural beauty without the crowds.

Stunning views. I highly recommend a day hiking trip on the cliffs. The sceneries are beautiful. We went in winter season and there was not many people. Easy to park and enjoy the place mostly for ourselves. They do also boat tours that take you inside the caves. I wish we could get there on a stormy day to see big water splashes through the wells.
