The Monchique Hot Springs Walk: A Free Thermal Escape in the Algarve Mountains
Everyone goes to the beach in the Algarve. But in the mountains above Monchique, there’s a different kind of warmth — water that bubbles up from underground at 37°C, completely free, surrounded by eucalyptus and cork trees. This is the Caldeirão walk, and it’s the perfect spring antidote to a week of ocean swimming.
Getting There
- Start: Monchique town centre (free parking at municipal lot)
- Route: Follow signs for “Caldeirão” — a well-maintained trail heads uphill into the forest
- Distance: 3km loop from town centre
- Terrain: Forested path, slight elevation gain, suitable for most fitness levels
- Spring tip: The hot spring is most atmospheric in cooler weather — March and April are ideal
What You’ll Find
- The hot spring source: a small pool where water emerges from the rock (too hot to bathe in at source)
- Lower pools: some visitors do paddle, though it’s not a formal bathing spot
- Old washing stones: remnants of when locals used the spring for laundry
- Forested trail: cork oaks, eucalyptus, native ferns
- Benches along the way for rest stops
The Walk Loop
From town → hot spring source → lower pools → forest loop → return via the same path (or a smaller circular option)
Local Safety/Conditions Tip
The source water is hot (37°C) — do not attempt to bathe at the main spring. Only the lower, cooled pools are sometimes used for paddling, and do so at your own risk. The trail is well-marked but can be muddy after rain. Wear sturdy shoes.
Practical Summary
This isn’t a spa day. It’s a free, atmospheric walk through the Algarve’s greenest corner, with the novelty of hot spring water in the mountains. Combine it with a Monchique café lunch (galão and a pastel de nata, maybe €3 total) for a perfect spring afternoon.
