Rocha da Pena

Inland from the beach traffic the Algarve turns into limestone hill country, and Rocha da Pena is its most abrupt statement: a table-topped escarpment rising out of the Barrocal scrub, cliff-faced along its southern edge, wild enough for nesting raptors and a spring flower show worth crossing the region for.

The classic circuit climbs from the hamlet of Penina, works along the plateau and comes back around the base. Up top, the reward is the long view: folded Barrocal hills running south into the coastal haze, the cliff edge dropping away in the foreground, raptors riding the updraft off the scarp when you are lucky. An old dry-stone wall crosses the plateau. People have been retreating up here for a very long time.

When to go: spring, without question. From late winter into April the slopes run with wild orchids, peonies and cistus, almond blossom opens around the base, and the light stays soft enough to walk at midday. Summer is the opposite case: the plateau has no shade, the limestone throws the heat back at you, and the landscape browns off. If you must come in summer, start at first light.

This is a proper hike, not a viewpoint stop: steep pulls on loose stone, uneven ground on top, full exposure to whatever the weather is doing. Boots and water are non-negotiable. A wide lens for the scarp and a long one for the birds both earn their carry.

Who it’s for: hikers and bird photographers first; botany obsessives in spring; anyone who has exhausted the coast and wants proof the Algarve has an interior. Not one for flip-flop detours. The hill punishes those.
