Every ‘typical Algarve village’ postcard is trying to describe Alte. Whitewashed lanes climbing a Barrocal hillside, filigree chimneys, blue and ochre trim, bougainvillea over doorways — and the detail that sets it apart, running water: the village sits on its springs, and the fontes where the stream surfaces have been Alte’s gathering place for centuries.
The photography is lane work and details. The parish church anchors the upper village with its carved Manueline doorway; below it the streets deliver tiled façades, potted geraniums, cats in doorways and calçada underfoot. Down at Fonte Grande and Fonte Pequena the mood changes — deep tree shade, picnic tables, water sliding over the weirs — a greener, softer counterpoint to the bright streets above.
When to go: spring, when the stream is full, the hills behind are green and the bougainvillea gets going; or any clear morning before the day-trip groups arrive, while the light is still low in the lanes. Summer afternoons are harsh in the open streets — the fontes are the refuge.
Be honest about scale: Alte is a couple of unhurried hours, not a destination day. That is an argument for pairing, not skipping — the Queda do Vigário waterfall sits just below the village, and Rocha da Pena and Fonte da Benémola are close enough to stack into the best slow inland day the central Algarve offers.
Who it’s for: detail-and-doorway photographers; travellers who want the inland Algarve without logistics; anyone needing an antidote to the coast in August. Budget time for a coffee under the trees — that is half the point.
