Queda do Vigário

Queda do Vigário is a gamble, and you should know it before you drive out. When it is running — after a properly wet winter — a white ribbon of water drops over an ochre lip into a pool just below the village of Alte, and it is one of the inland Algarve’s best scenes. After a dry winter it is a stain on the rock. Check recent rainfall before you build a day around it.

The setting earns the trip even at half flow. The stream comes down from Alte’s fountain springs, the fall cuts over a small cliff face, and the pool below collects swimmers on the first warm days of spring. Shoot from below with the fall centred, or work the stream running toward the lip from above. Long exposures want the fuller flows of late winter.

When to go: winter through spring, tied entirely to rain. Late winter to mid-spring after a wet season is the sweet spot — real flow, green banks, warm enough to linger. By summer the fall is usually down to little or nothing. That is the honest deal with every Algarve waterfall: the geology gives, the rainfall decides.

Who it’s for: waterfall chasers who accept the odds; picnickers — this is a Sunday spot for the surrounding villages when the water is up; photographers pairing it with Alte itself, a short walk uphill. If the winter was dry, go straight to Fonte da Benémola instead — spring-fed beats rain-fed in a drought.
