Armação de Pêra’s seafront is one long band of town sand; walk it west and, where the apartment blocks give way and the first rocks appear, you are at Praia do Vale do Olival. It is the transition beach — urban Armação behind you, the cliff-and-cove coast toward Senhora da Rocha beginning in front — and it takes a little of its character from each: broad, easy sand with sandstone outcrops starting to punctuate it.

As a beach day it is straightforward in the best way: easy access, services in season, water that shelves gently, and enough space that it absorbs its summer numbers better than the coves further west. As a photograph it is quieter — the interest is at the western end, where the rock starts, and in the long wet-sand reflections back toward town in low light.

When to go: it works all day as a family beach; photographers should aim for the ends of the day, when low light gives the sandstone its colour and the glare comes off the town front.

Who it’s for: families staying in Armação who want the town beach without the town density; anyone easing from the flat eastern sands into cove country. Dedicated cove hunters should keep going — Senhora da Rocha and the Lagoa coast are minutes away.
