A quiet notch in the cliffs on the Carvoeiro stretch of Lagoa’s coast, Vale da Lapa is one of the coves the crowds never reach: partly because almost nobody writes about it, partly because getting down is nobody’s idea of convenient. Expect rough ground rather than infrastructure, and expect to have the sand close to yourself if you make it.
The usual Lagoa caveats apply with extra force: the cliffs here are soft, undercut sandstone, so keep away from the rock face and the unfenced edges above, and there is no supervision of any kind at the water.
Who it’s for: cove collectors and photographers who value solitude over amenities and are comfortable on rough coastal ground. Verify access on the ground before planning a shoot around it.
