Forte Novo is Quarteira without the promenade: a straight, open run of sand on the eastern edge of town, where the high-rise backdrop gives way to low bluffs and scrub. It’s a locals’ beach in the honest sense: unpolished, unpretentious, and noticeably quieter than the town sands a short walk west.
The honesty comes first here: this is not a postcard cove. The land behind the beach is low and unremarkable, the coastline is flat, and the eye-candy is the sea itself rather than any rock formation. What it offers instead is elbow room, long walks in either direction, and a strain of unglamorous fishing-coast character that most of the central Algarve has polished away.
When to go: early morning, when the light is low along the sand and the beach belongs to walkers and the odd fisherman. Summer afternoons bring a steady local crowd, rarely a crush.
Who it’s for: anyone staying in Quarteira or Vilamoura who wants sand without the scene; walkers linking the coast east toward the Ancão dunes; photographers more interested in fishermen, texture and empty space than in arches. If you want drama, this isn’t it, and it isn’t trying to be.
