Praia do Almargem

Ten minutes east of Quarteira’s high-rise seafront, the coast drops the urban costume. Praia do Almargem sits where the Ribeira de Almargem meets the sea and pools into a brackish lagoon behind the sand — a beach with a wetland attached, backed by low crumbling ochre cliffs and dune scrub rather than hotels. The lagoon and its neighbouring wetlands are classified as a local nature reserve, and the birdlife shows it.

The combination is what you shoot: still lagoon water doubling the sky on one side of the sandbar, surf on the other, and reeds and dune grass doing the foreground work. The beach itself is broad, natural and mostly unattended — no promenade, no sunbed geometry, and far fewer people than the serviced sand on either side of it.

Honesty first: the cliffs here are low, soft and actively eroding — stay off the edges and away from the base. Access is by dirt track rather than boulevard, which is precisely what keeps the numbers down. And the sea is open coast, not lagoon — expect proper waves on windy days.

When to go: early, for birds on the lagoon and untracked sand; winter gives the wetland its fullest water and the emptiest frames.

Who it’s for: bird photographers, reflection hunters, and anyone staying in Quarteira or Vilamoura who wants wild without driving far. Families with beach-kit expectations will be happier on the town sand.
