First, the disambiguation: this is not the Praia do Barranco near Sagres, the off-grid surf cove with the camper vans. That one sits a long way west. This Barranco is a small cove on Lagoa’s limestone coast, on the quiet stretch between Senhora da Rocha and the showpiece coves around Albandeira: the same gold rock and carved stacks as its famous neighbours, minus the tour-bus gravity.
It follows the pattern of the lesser Lagoa coves: a barranco (a gully) cutting down through the cliffs to a pocket of sand that swells and shrinks with the tide, clear water over rock and sand, and no services of any kind. The clifftop path along this coast walks straight past it, which is how most people find it: as the empty cove between the ones they came for.
When to go: low tide, for the sand; outside July and August, for the solitude that is the entire argument. The coast path above gives you elevated frames of the whole cove without committing to the descent.
