Cova Redonda means ’round hollow’, and the name is the description: a small, scooped cove in the ochre cliffs near Porches, with a stairway delivering you into an amphitheatre of orange rock, weathered stacks and clear, sheltered water. It sits in the shadow of a more famous neighbour — the chapel-topped headland of Senhora da Rocha is just along the coast — and stays quieter for it.

The cove is compact and the cliffs do the framing. Sculpted sandstone closes both ends, there’s rock detail everywhere the light falls, and the water inside the hollow stays calm on days when more exposed beaches are churning. High tide takes a real bite out of the sand, so timing matters more here than it would on a bigger beach.

When to go: mornings and low tide, ideally together — the sand is at its widest and the cove still feels like a discovery rather than a shared resource. Summer afternoons bring a steady crowd from the resorts above, never Benagil-scale but enough to fill a small floor of sand.

Who it’s for: anyone staying around Porches or Armação de Pêra who wants a proper carved-cliff cove without the pilgrimage crowds; photographers who like working tight — stacks, hollows and orange rock at close range rather than grand vistas.
