The Restinga is Alvor’s sandspit — a long arm of dune and beach that seals the Ria de Alvor off from the open sea, with calm lagoon water on one side, Atlantic on the other, and wooden boardwalks threading through the dunes between them. It’s less a beach you sit on than a landscape you walk through: flat, wide, wind-scoured and, by central-Algarve standards, startlingly undeveloped.

The double character is the draw. The lagoon side is sheltered, shallow and busy with birdlife; the ocean side is open sand running further than most people bother to walk. The boardwalks — built to protect the dunes — have become a photograph in their own right, all leading lines and low scrub.

When to go: first and last light, when the boardwalks are empty, the lagoon goes still and the low sun gives this flat landscape the relief it lacks at noon. Wind is a fact of life on the spit — a calm evening is a gift, not a given. Summer afternoons fill the near end; the far end stays quiet.

Who it’s for: walkers and birders as much as swimmers; photographers working with dune lines, boardwalks and estuary light; families who want calm, shallow lagoon water for small children. Bring shade — the Restinga offers none of its own.

Wind is near-constant on the spit — plan around it rather than against it.
