Passadiços de Alvor

The Alvor boardwalks are proof that infrastructure can be the subject. Wooden walkways run from the village’s harbour edge out along the Ria de Alvor and through the dunes toward the open beach, and the shot everyone comes for is the boardwalk itself: converging lines cutting through dune grass, nobody on the planks yet, first light coming up over the estuary.

The route serves several pictures at once. On the ria side, the walkway skirts tidal flats and moored boats, with waders working the mud at low tide. Through the dunes, the lines are pure geometry. At the seaward end, the boardwalk delivers you onto a wide, unbacked stretch of sand where the estuary meets the Atlantic.

When to go: sunrise, and it is not close. The boardwalk runs are at their best empty, the light comes up over the ria, and by mid-morning in season you are sharing the planks with a steady stream of walkers, runners and cyclists. Winter mornings can be mirror-still on the estuary side.

Practical texture: this is as easy as Algarve nature access gets — flat, free, walkable from Alvor village, no tides or scrambles to plan around. Bring a long lens if birds are part of the plan; the waders keep a working distance.

Who it’s for: photographers who like leading lines and negative space more than cliff drama. Birdwatchers on the ria side. Runners and walkers who want their exercise scenic. Families with buggies — this is the rare Algarve spot where wheels are no problem. If sunrise discipline is not in you, it is still a good walk; the geometry just works harder without the crowds in the frame.
