Mountain Views and Big Flavors on the Road to Foia

O Rei do Piri-Piri is a laid-back roadside restaurant on the climb toward Foia, and it’s the kind of stop that turns a scenic drive into a full experience. Set along the mountain road in Monchique, it’s known for its relaxed vibe, friendly service, and those “wow” views that make you want to linger a little longer—especially if you’re heading to or coming back from the viewpoint.

The menu leans into crowd-pleasing comfort food with a local touch. Many people come specifically for the piri piri chicken, described as moist, flavorful, and genuinely satisfying—exactly what you want after fresh mountain air. Portions are generous across the board, and if you’re hungry, you’ll feel well looked after. The bitoque is another popular choice, often noted for being a hearty plate that feels like great value for what you get.

And then there’s the unexpected hit: pizza. If you’re craving something easy to share, the pizzas are famously large—big enough that splitting one is a smart move. Pair that with the panoramic setting and you’ve got a casual meal that feels like a mini event.

For something different to take with you, don’t miss the pomegranate juice to go. It’s considered a bit of a treat, but many say it’s absolutely worth it—especially as a refreshing pick-me-up on a day of sightseeing.

What really pulls the experience together is the hospitality. Guests often mention service with a smile and a team that keeps things welcoming and easygoing. If you want a relaxed lunch stop with mountain-view dining, generous portions, and flavorful classics on the Foia road, O Rei do Piri-Piri is well worth the detour—or the planned stop.

Great little pizza place half way up the mountain. Amazing views. The pizzas were great, but they are huge, you could definitely share one. They sell pomegranate juice to take away. It is a bit pricey, but oh so worth it. Being the first week of January it was fairly quiet, so no queues.
