Lagoa dos Salgados

A lagoon full of flamingos wedged between golf fairways and the Atlantic should not work, but Salgados does. The wetland sits behind the dunes between Galé and Armação de Pêra, and a wooden boardwalk threads along it — reeds on one side, open water on the other, birds going about their business a few metres from the rail.

The photography splits in two. Long-lens birdlife: greater flamingos, spoonbills, stilts and herons — the lagoon is one of the most reliable birding sites in the central Algarve, and the boardwalk works as a ready-made hide because the birds are habituated to walkers. And wide graphic frames: boardwalk lines converging into the dunes, still water doubling the sky at either end of the day.

When to go: first light. The water is glass, the light is soft and the birds feed close in. Numbers swell in the migration seasons and after wet winters; be honest with your expectations after a long dry spell, when the water level drops and the birds spread thin. Late afternoon into sunset is the second window.

Who it’s for: bird photographers who want flamingos without the Ria Formosa’s logistics; sunrise walkers from the Galé and Salgados resorts; anyone who likes nature accessible — the boardwalk is flat and easy from end to end. Bring the longest lens you own; the wide shot works from a phone.
