Grande undersells it. Praia Grande de Pêra is the long, open sweep between Armação de Pêra and Galé — a beach measured in kilometres rather than metres, backed by dunes and, behind them, the Salgados lagoon, one of the Algarve’s best birdwatching wetlands. Flamingos, spoonbills and stilts work the water a few hundred metres from the towels, which is not a pairing many beaches can offer.

The beach itself is flat, wide and open — no cliffs, no coves, no shade beyond what you bring. Boardwalks cross the dunes, and the walk along the sand toward Armação de Pêra or Galé is as good as Algarve beach walking gets on the soft-coast side. The openness has a price: when the wind blows, there is nowhere to hide from it.

When to go: early and late. Morning light on the lagoon brings the birds out of silhouette, and evenings give long shadows on empty dunes. In August the central stretch stays surprisingly workable — the beach simply absorbs people.

Who it’s for: birders with a beach habit, long-distance walkers, families who want space over facilities, and photographers who’d rather have dune grass and wading birds in the frame than another cliff arch.
