Alfanzina

Alfanzina is a coastal stop where the lighthouse, limestone cliffs and sea-carved openings share the frame. The red-capped tower gives the place its clearest landmark, but the foreground matters just as much: algares cut vertically through the rock, turning the cliff edge into a textured subject rather than a simple sea view.

The lighthouse brings a clean graphic shape to the coast. It dates from 1919, was electrified in 1950, and has a 15 metre tower whose two flashes are visible far out at sea. From ground level, the strongest photographs use the tower as a fixed point against the low, pale cliffs and Atlantic water.

The wider Alfanzina edge sits on the Seven Hanging Valleys route, so it works especially well as part of a coastal photography circuit. Nearby names that naturally pair with it include Vale de Centeanes, Vale Espinhaço, Vale Covo and the lighthouse itself. Keep the frame tight if you want Alfanzina to read as its own place, since this stretch of coast quickly blends into neighbouring coves and headlands.

When to go: sunset is the clearest light cue here. The cliffs pick up warm colour late in the day, and the lighthouse silhouette becomes stronger as the sky drops behind the coast. Midday can still work for graphic, minimal compositions of tower, rock and sky, but the rock texture is less forgiving in hard light.

Access is by the coastal route around Alfanzina, with cliff paths linking it into the Seven Hanging Valleys walk. Stay back from the cliff edge around the algares, since the vertical openings are part of the subject and part of the risk.
