Praia das Cabanas Velhas sits on the stretch of coast where the Algarve starts to run out of development — between Burgau and the empty valley of Boca do Rio, in Vila do Bispo’s quiet southeastern corner. A narrow road drops to a small beach of sand and rock, with low cliffs either side, clear water over a rocky seabed, and a fraction of the traffic that fills the beaches back toward Lagos.
It’s a beach of textures rather than postcards. Reefs and rock slabs show at low tide, the snorkelling is better than average for the south coast, and the coast path passes directly above — walkers drop in from the Burgau or Boca do Rio direction as often as drivers arrive. Services are minimal and seasonal at best; assume you’re bringing what you need.
When to go: low tide for the rock pools and the widest sand, and late afternoon for the light — the low cliffs warm up and the water goes glassy on calm evenings. It rarely feels crowded even in August; busy here means dozens, not hundreds.
Who it’s for: people staying around Burgau and Salema who want a quieter option than either; snorkellers and rock-poolers; and coast-path walkers looking for the obvious swim stop on the Burgau–Boca do Rio leg.
