Lagos keeps a beach practically inside the town. Praia da Batata is the first sand south of the Ponta da Bandeira fort — step off the avenue, round the fort walls, and you’re on it. The name translates as ‘potato beach’, and nobody quite agrees on why; what matters is that no beach in the Algarve is easier to reach without a car.

It’s a small, sheltered cove by Lagos standards, facing into the bay rather than the open ocean, so the water is usually calmer than at the cliff beaches further out. At the southern end, tunnels through the rock open into the neighbouring coves at lower tides — a five-minute adventure that children treat as the entire point of the day.

Be realistic about the crowds: its position makes it the default beach for everyone staying in the centre, and summer afternoons are dense. This is a town beach with town-beach energy — lively rather than tranquil.

When to go: mornings, before the day fills in, or off-season, when it reverts to the locals and the light across the bay gets clean and low.

Who it’s for: anyone in Lagos without wheels, families with small kids who want calm water and rock tunnels, and photographers working the fort and the bay rather than the cliff coves — Camilo and Dona Ana handle those.
