Alvor’s beach is the central Algarve at full width — a vast, flat sweep of sand running east from the mouth of the Ria de Alvor, backed by dunes rather than buildings, with a network of wooden boardwalks threading over the dune field and along the estuary. The boardwalks are an attraction in themselves: flat, pushchair-friendly, and the best free walk in this corner of the coast.

The beach has two personalities. At the village end it’s serviced and busy — sunbeds, beach cafés, holiday crowds within walking distance of Alvor’s restaurants. Walk west toward the ria and it empties fast, ending at the estuary mouth where sandbanks, moored boats and wading birds take over and the Monchique hills stand behind the water. Same beach, entirely different afternoon.

When to go: sunset, without much argument — the sun goes down over the ria and the boardwalks hand you the composition. Summer middays belong to the swimmers; walkers get the edges of the day.

Who it’s for: families — flat sand, gentler water than the west coast, everything nearby; walkers and runners, for whom the boardwalk-and-beach loop is the point; photographers who want estuary light instead of cliff drama.
