The white chapel on the headland gets the fame — and has its own listing — but the cove beneath it is a proper beach in its own right: a sheltered pocket of sand at the foot of Porches’ promontory, with fishing boats still hauled up on it and cliffs closing in on either side. The chapel appears at the top of nearly every frame here, a whitewashed full stop on the skyline, but this page is about the sand below it.

The cove is protected enough to stay swimmable when more open beaches are churned up, and a hand-cut tunnel through the headland links it to the neighbouring cove of Praia Nova — a two-minute walk-through that’s a small photograph in itself, sand framed in a rock doorway. In season the beach runs to the usual serviced rhythm; off season it goes back to the boats.

When to go: early or late, when the light gets low enough to model the headland and the day-trip flow to the chapel viewpoint thins. Summer afternoons are family hour — better for swimming than shooting.

Who it’s for: families after calm, sheltered water; photographers pairing the beach with the chapel walk above — do both, they’re one visit; anyone driving the N125 through Porches with an hour to spare.
