Salgados is two habitats sharing a car park: a broad, dune-backed Atlantic beach on one side of the boardwalk and a lagoon full of birds on the other. The beach itself is a long, open run of pale sand stretching toward Armação de Pêra with none of central Albufeira’s cliff theatre — the appeal is scale, walking room and genuinely open horizons, with waves that carry more push than the sheltered coves to the east.

The lagoon is what makes it unusual. Lagoa dos Salgados is one of the Algarve’s best accessible birdwatching wetlands — flamingos, spoonbills, herons and stilts work the shallows within easy lens range of the boardwalk, and no other beach in the region lets you swing between shorebreak and wetland in a two-minute walk.

When to go: sunset, when the lagoon goes to glass and mirrors the sky; early mornings for the birds. Migration seasons load the wetland; high summer loads the sand — the beach serves the surrounding resorts and fills accordingly near the entrances, though a ten-minute walk west still buys space.

Who it’s for: bird photographers, who should treat this as a destination in its own right; walkers doing the long run to Armação de Pêra; families who prefer open sand to cove-hopping — mind that the waves here are livelier than at the postcard coves.

Photography Notes

  • Shooting Notes
The lagoon boardwalk doubles as a hide — a long lens earns flamingos, spoonbills and stilts without leaving the path.
  • Light & Sun Notes
Sunset flattens the lagoon to glass — mirrored sky, silhouetted waders.
  • Conditions
Open-coast waves with more push than Albufeira's sheltered coves.
