Between Quarteira’s apartment line and Vale do Lobo’s resort front sits a stretch of coast that somehow stayed empty — and Trafal is it. The beach runs long and open below low ochre bluffs, backed not by buildings but by dune scrub and a small coastal lagoon where the Almargem stream pools behind the sand. The area is now part of a local nature reserve, which should keep it this way.

What you get is the central Algarve without the furniture: no sunbed rows, no beach clubs, just sand, the odd fisherman, and a kind of quiet that has become rare on this part of the coast. The bluffs are soft and actively eroding — keep off the edges and don’t sit under them — and the lagoon behind draws herons and waders that have no interest in your towel.

When to go: it works at any hour, but early and late light does good things to the red bluffs, and the lagoon gives still reflections on windless mornings.

Who it’s for: walkers doing the Quarteira–Vale do Lobo shoreline; birders; anyone staying in the resort belt who wants twenty minutes of coast that doesn’t feel managed.
