Praia de Vale do Lobo

The cliffs are the story here. Praia de Vale do Lobo runs below a wall of ochre and rust-coloured sandstone: the eroded, fluted faces that show up in every aerial shot of the Golden Triangle, with the resort’s famous clifftop golf hole perched above them. The beach itself is a long, wide band of golden sand fronting the Vale do Lobo resort, groomed and serviced in a way most Algarve beaches aren’t.

Be clear about what this is: a resort beach. Beach clubs, loungers and a polished crowd in season, with prices to match. That cuts both ways: it’s one of the easiest beaches in the Algarve to spend a full day on, and one of the least wild.

The cliffs are actively eroding, they’re photogenic precisely because they’re crumbling, so stay off the base where it’s marked and don’t climb them for an angle.

When to go: late afternoon, when low sun hits the ochre faces and the colour goes from dusty to lit-from-inside. Off-season the resort quiets down and the beach gets long and empty in a way that surprises people.

Who it’s for: golfers and Golden Triangle guests, obviously; but also photographers chasing eroded-cliff texture, which is at its best along this stretch of coast, and anyone who wants their beach day fully catered.
