Homem Nu — ‘naked man’ — says it plainly, and so will we: this stretch of Ilha de Tavira’s barrier-island sand is a long-established naturist beach, the best known in the Algarve, and it’s treated matter-of-factly by everyone on it. Naturism here is practical information, not the story. The story is the setting: a long, buildingless run of dune-backed sand between Barril and Cabanas, with the warm, flat sea of the eastern Algarve in front and the Ria Formosa lagoon behind.

The walk is the filter. There’s no road and no clifftop car park spilling people onto the sand — you come along the island on foot from Praia do Barril to the west or from the Cabanas side to the east, and the distance does what distance always does: the further you walk, the fewer people you share the beach with. Even in August, the crowd thins to scattered figures against a straight horizon.

When to go: summer for the swimming — the east coast’s water is the warmest in the Algarve — and shoulder season for near-total solitude. There is no shade and there are no services on this stretch; carry what you need, including more water than feels necessary.

Who it’s for: naturists, obviously, who get one of Portugal’s established naturist beaches; and walkers who want the emptiest sand in the Tavira orbit and don’t mind the terms of entry — flat light, long distances, and nothing built in the frame.
