The Algarve postcard is all cliffs and coves; Monte Gordo tore that page out. What you get instead is one of the biggest, flattest expanses of sand in the south — a beach so wide that in August, with the town behind it at full capacity, there is still room to breathe once you walk a few hundred metres from the main accesses. The sea here is reputedly the warmest in the Algarve, shallow and gentle, which is why families from both sides of the Spanish border have been loyal to it for generations.

Be clear about what this is: a resort-town beach with a backdrop of mid-rise hotels and apartment blocks, not a wild cove. The trade is honest — level access from the town, restaurants a minute from the sand, and a horizon with absolutely nothing in it. That emptiness is the photographic point. Dune grass, white light, a colossal sky, and figures reduced to specks: Monte Gordo does minimalism better than almost anywhere on this coast.

When to go: summer for the warm-water swimming it is famous for; autumn and winter for near-empty sand and enormous skies. Low sun rakes down the length of the beach and the wet sand mirrors it.

Who it’s for: families and warm-water swimmers first; photographers who like flat horizons and negative space; anyone who finds the western Algarve’s cove-hopping too much work. Cliff hunters should look elsewhere — there is not a rock in sight.

Photography Notes

  • Shooting Notes
Work the emptiness — dune grass, walkers as specks, the flat horizon. Minimalism is the subject here.
  • Light & Sun Notes
South-facing and dead flat — low sun rakes the full length of the beach and wet sand doubles the sky.
