A stretch of the long, pine-backed sand that runs between Monte Gordo and the Guadiana mouth, Três Pauzinhos is what the eastern Algarve does instead of coves: flat, wide, and open to a horizon with no rock in it. The water here is among the warmest and calmest in the region, and the crowd thins noticeably once you’re away from Monte Gordo’s resort frontage. This is where locals walk when they want the same sea with fewer sunbeds.

As a photograph it’s about emptiness and light: dune grass, umbrella pines behind, long shallow water that mirrors the sky at low sun. Midday flattens a beach this open. Go early or late.

Who it’s for: walkers, swimmers who like warm water, and anyone staying around Monte Gordo or Vila Real who wants distance from the towel rows.
