Paddle into Benagil’s Sea Caves with a Team That Knows the Coast

Benagil kayaks is a go-to kayak cave tour operator on Estr. de Benagil in Lagoa, perfectly placed for exploring the Algarve’s most famous coastline from the water. If you want more than a quick photo stop, this is the kind of trip that lets you properly experience the cliffs, arches, and hidden inlets—at sea level—while learning the local stories along the way.

What stands out is the guiding: friendly, calm, and clearly experienced, with communication that’s easy for international visitors. Along the route, guides point out coastal details you’d likely miss on your own and share bits of history and local context as you move from one scenic spot to the next. Expect beautiful stretches of rugged coast, the main Benagil sea cave, and smaller caves that are simply not reachable by bigger boats—one of the biggest advantages of going by kayak.

This outing is active and can be demanding, especially when launching into the water and dealing with waves at the start, so it’s best for travelers who are comfortable with a bit of effort. Going as a pair in a tandem kayak can make the paddling feel easier and more steady. Preparation makes all the difference: bring water, sunscreen (the reflection off the ocean is strong), and consider a light long-sleeve top for sun protection. You’ll also appreciate having a towel and dry clothes on hand—getting splashed is part of the fun.

Practical touches help the day run smoothly. There’s storage at the meeting point, plus useful gear like life jackets and wet bags to keep your essentials safe while you’re on the water. After your session, outdoor showers make it easy to rinse off salt and sand before heading to your next stop. For visitors planning a highlight day in Lagoa, this is a memorable way to see the Algarve coast with the confidence of a well-run, safety-minded team.

The guides are super friendly and helpful, they clearly have lots of experience and are very good at what they do, and also spoke excellent English, we spent about three hours at sea and seen loads of lovely caves and coasts where the guides explained lots of history and different bits and bobs of interest, you do need to be physically fit to do this !!! Especially at the beginning when you are pushed out you are fighting waves, i was with someone else so found it much easier but it is tiring and you will need a good breakfast beforehand. There is storage at the meeting point- definitely bring a change of clothes, towel, water bottle sunscreen etc. I didn’t and got soaked 😆 you can wear trainers etc there and then sliders crocs or barefoot in the kayak, they provide you with wet bags and life jackets which is great, the bags especially were super helpful. You will also need sunscreen as the sun reflecting off of the water is very strong, a light shirt will be great to help protect against the sun. They have showers outdoor at the meeting point facility to rinse off the sea and sand and quickly dry off aswell which is great. I thoroughly enjoyed the full tour it is worth every penny, just would come better prepared with spare clothes next time which is entirely my fault for not thinking about getting soaking 😂 thankyou guys for a wonderful experience, highlight of the holiday

A great way to explore the main Benagil sea cave and better still the smaller caves only accessible by kayak. Beautiful views of the coast. Guides were well informed, friendly, funny in Portuguese, English and French. Would highly recommend

Our guide was Simao. We had a great time. Waves were mild and we had a gorgeous day. Got a little tired after about 90 minutes. The tour took 2 hours. Once we tightened up the back rest straps it helped a lot. Get a water proof cover for your phone. You will get wet at least from the waist down. No problem on a sunny 75 degree day. Highly recommend it.
