A True Hidden Gem for Big Flavours: Fernando’s Hideaway

Tucked away on a quiet side street, Fernando’s Hideaway lives up to its name—in the best possible way. If you’re wandering around Quarteira and want to escape the more touristy terraces without giving up on a great meal, this welcoming restaurant is a smart find. It’s the sort of place locals return to again and again, and visitors end up recommending to everyone they know after just one visit.

The vibe is relaxed and easy, with seating both indoors and outdoors—ideal for breezy evenings or cooler nights when you still want that Algarve feel. Service here tends to start on a hospitable note, with touches that make you feel immediately looked after, like being greeted with a glass of red wine and a bowl of tasty olives. It’s warm, personal, and consistent, whether you’re dining solo or arriving with a big group of friends.

Food is the headline. Guests talk about every meal being delicious, with a menu that satisfies seafood lovers while really shining on the grill. The ribeye is frequently mentioned, famously generous and filling the plate—perfect if you’re craving a proper steak dinner. If you want something even more dramatic, the T-bone is a favourite for being massive and beautifully cooked, hitting that sweet spot of char, tenderness, and bold flavour.

There’s also a playful, confident side to the menu that keeps things interesting. Dishes like the so-called “invisible meat kebab” have earned a reputation for great taste and memorable presentation, and portion sizes tend to make value feel like part of the experience—not an afterthought. In short, come hungry, take your time, and don’t be surprised if you end up planning a second visit before you’ve even paid the bill. For great value dining and hearty plates with real personality, Fernando’s Hideaway is a must in the Vilamoura/Quarteira area.

The appetizer for two consisted of dry bread and olives, and the portion was far too small (we specifically asked if it was really for two people). The redfish was like frozen fish fingers, the house steak was okay, but miles away from a good steak, the side dish portion was an insult, and overall it was disappointing. The service was also rather perfunctory. Perhaps one can't expect more from a holiday restaurant.

We ordered t-bone and ribeye, both to be rare, ribeye arrived not being ribeye at all, but we decided to try it, t-bone arrived as well done, we sent it back, next attempt arrived being very cold inside, when we asked a waiter about it, the chef came out from the kitchen and started shouting at us, when I asked him not to raise his voice at us, he started to shout that he wants us to leave and that he doesn’t want any money. Very strange place, most definitely is absolutely nothing to do with “steakhouse”, a shame to Portuguese cuisine and Portuguese culture
