Tucked along R. Torre da Medronheira, Calheiros is the kind of welcoming local restaurant you’re thrilled to discover on a stroll—then immediately want to return to before everyone else finds it. Set in the heart of Olhos de Água, it balances an easy holiday vibe with that unmistakable “proper Portuguese kitchen” feel, where the plates arrive looking as good as they taste.
What keeps people coming back is the simple, confident cooking and the generous approach to portions. Seafood lovers regularly single out the fresh grilled squid for being perfectly cooked—tender, flavoursome, and expertly seasoned. If you’re in the mood for something hearty, the chicken kebab is another standout: well-presented, juicy, and packed with flavour. The menu offers plenty of choice, so it works just as well for a relaxed couple’s dinner as it does for a family meal where everyone wants something different.
The atmosphere shifts quickly from quiet early evening to lively and buzzing—so if you like a calmer table, arriving a little earlier can make all the difference. Even when it gets busy, the team keeps things moving with a warm, friendly style that makes you feel genuinely looked after rather than rushed.
And save room for dessert. It’s not an afterthought here—there’s a real sense of pride in the homemade sweets, and they’re often described as the perfect finish to a memorable meal. If you’re building a shortlist of where to eat in Olhos de Água, Calheiros earns its spot with ease.

in the last weekUnfortunately, the food was a complete disappointment. Both the meat and fish skewers were dripping with grease and oil and didn't taste particularly good. The side dishes were equally disappointing: the fries were the worst I've ever seen – so soggy and unappetizing that I didn't even eat them. The vegetables were completely overcooked. The appetizers were also underwhelming. We found it particularly odd that the bread basket contained rusks as an appetizer – I've never experienced that before. Furthermore, the main courses were served while we were still in the middle of our appetizers. This meant that space had to be hastily cleared on the table, and our appetizers were simply taken away before we had even finished them. Overall, it was a very unpleasant dining experience.

a week agoExceptional restaurant hidden in the side street. Very pleasant atmosphere and lovely stuff. Food was really good and tasty. Very interesting experience they were offering cakes in such way that they brought them all directly on your table. Little bit funny, we liked that. They also served goodbye drink. We felt there very relaxed and welcome. Highly recommend.

a week agoWe visited the restaurant twice during our holiday. The service, especially from Cidalia, was exceptionally good, as she is a wonderfully warm and helpful person who passionately gives excellent recommendations. We particularly recommend the seafood cataplana, the Portuguese steak, and the Calheiros steak platter. The desserts, Doce da casa and Banofee, are also divine. And to top it all off, they offer a complimentary glass of port!

2 weeks agoMy family and ate in many different places over our week-long holidays in Algavre. We liked this place the most. Great food at affordable prices. Cataplana was excellent.
