Authentic Portuguese Flavors in Olhos de Água—Fresh Fish Done Right

Tucked along Rua 25 Abril, Restaurant O’Cantil is the kind of Portuguese restaurant in Olhos de Água that brings you back to what eating out on the Algarve should feel like: friendly, relaxed, and centered around great seafood. It’s a family-run spot with a warm welcome, and diners often mention returning multiple times during the same holiday—always a strong sign that the kitchen is doing something right.

If you’re craving a break from the standard vacation menus, O’Cantil is a refreshing change of pace. The seafood is the star, and the best approach is to ask what’s fresh that day—guests regularly recommend doing exactly that before choosing your main. The fish specials get a lot of love, especially golden sea bream (dorade), served simply so the flavor stays front and center. For something a little more indulgent, the fried prawns have a loyal following for good reason: crisp, satisfying, and perfect with a cold drink.

One dish that consistently stands out is the cataplana, often praised as a top choice in town. It’s the kind of hearty, aromatic seafood meal that feels both local and celebratory—ideal for a longer dinner when you want to settle in and enjoy the atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere, this is a place for a proper Portuguese evening: unpretentious surroundings, genuine hospitality, and a dining room where the staff make you feel looked after without hovering.

Whether you’re a seafood devotee or simply want a memorable meal that feels rooted in the region, O’Cantil delivers that “right place, right time” feeling—especially when you’re after honest cooking, kind service, and a table that invites you to linger.

For visitors looking for fresh fish, classic Algarve dishes, and an authentic local vibe in Olhos de Água, Restaurant O’Cantil is a smart, satisfying pick.

Friendly, attentive service, but not overly so. The food was fresh and homemade. The ambiance was simple but with nice blue and white tablecloths.

The seafood faijoada was spectacular. The tuna salad was delicious, as was the house wine. The rice pudding was a delight. And we finished with a very tasty cortado. To top it all off, when you ask for the bill, they bring you a shot to sweeten the experience. . Even though it's inexpensive. Plus, they allowed dogs on the terrace.
