Trilho do Ludo

Flat, quiet and full of birds — the Ludo trail is where the Ria Formosa lets you walk straight into its plumbing. The route runs along old salt pans and lagoon channels between Faro’s airport edge and the São Lourenço side toward Quinta do Lago, and it’s the region’s most reliable flamingo stage: pink lines feeding in the pans, spoonbills sweeping the shallows, stilts and waders working the mud in every direction.

There’s no drama here, and that’s the appeal. The landscape is horizontal — water, bund walls, pines on the inland edge, the graphic geometry of the salt pans — so the pictures come from light, reflections and birds rather than terrain. Aircraft sliding low over the lagoon toward the runway add a surreal counterpoint some photographers chase deliberately.

When to go: winter and the shoulder months are peak flamingo season, with the biggest flocks in the pans; early morning gives still water, soft light and the most bird activity. Summer mornings still deliver, but heat-haze and quieter pans flatten the show by midday.

The trail is level and easy — walking or cycling both work, and a long lens matters more than fitness here. Keep your distance from the birds; they lift off at far less provocation than you’d expect, and a flushed pan helps nobody.

Who it’s for: bird photographers, obviously — this is the east Algarve’s essential wildlife walk. Also anyone burned out on cliffs who wants the region’s flat, watery other half. Bring the longest glass you own and go slowly.
