Praia da Quinta do Lago

The walk in is the signature: a long wooden footbridge striding across the Ria Formosa’s marsh and water, delivering you from manicured resort lawns to open Atlantic sand. The bridge has become a photograph in its own right — leading lines, still water, wading birds below — and plenty of people come for it as much as for the beach at the end.

On the far side, the sand is a broad golden stretch of the Ancão peninsula, backed by dunes rather than buildings. It’s serviced in season and carries an upscale crowd from the resort behind it, but the beach itself is democratic — walk a few hundred metres in either direction and the towels thin to almost nothing.

When to go: the bridge frame wants early morning or late evening, when the ria goes glassy and the light drops low; the lagoon is also at its best for birdlife at the quiet ends of the day. In summer the sand around the bridge fills from late morning — walking is the cure.
