A Classic Portuguese Feast in the Hills of Barranco do Velho

Tia Bia is a true destination restaurant—worth the drive, worth the planning, and absolutely worth arriving hungry. Set in the quiet countryside of Barranco do Velho, this welcoming Portuguese spot has the charm of a place locals treasure: warm, unpretentious hospitality, a buzzing dining room at lunchtime, and plates that arrive generous enough to make you pause and smile.

The menu leans into the region’s hearty side, with a strong focus on traditional cooking and a lineup that often features wild game—think deer, boar, and porco preto—while still offering fish options for those who prefer something lighter. It’s the kind of selection that feels rooted in place, especially when you’re sitting in the middle of the hills with nothing around but open land and quiet roads.

Portion size is part of the legend here. Guests regularly mention that the servings are huge for the price, making it ideal for sharing or for anyone who loves the comforting satisfaction of a proper Portuguese meal. Lamb is a highlight for many first-timers: expect succulent, slow-roasted cuts that come with potatoes and vegetables, with enough on the plate to comfortably feed two. The flavors are straightforward and deeply satisfying—no fuss, just well-executed classics.

Even when the restaurant is full (which is common on Sundays), the team keeps the atmosphere friendly and upbeat. Service is often described as both efficient and genuinely kind, the sort that makes newcomers feel instantly at home. If you’re planning a weekend visit, it’s smart to reserve ahead so you can relax and enjoy the experience without the wait.

There’s also a welcoming outdoor terrace, and it’s dog-friendly—perfect if you’re exploring the area and don’t want to leave anyone behind. Add in the scenic drive across the hills—especially beautiful earlier in the day—and you’ve got a meal that feels like an outing, not just a stop for food.

For authentic comfort food and a true countryside vibe, Tia Bia is one of the most rewarding choices for Portuguese restaurant dining in Barranco do Velho.

Discovered by chance during a motorcycle ride, this restaurant is simply incredible: a very warm welcome, top-notch service, excellent and very generous portions (I was even able to take home the rest of my hunter's migas!), a lovely glass-enclosed terrace, and reasonable prices. I'll definitely be back!

We took a drive out just to go to Tia Bia for lunch. The food was so different but in a good way. We ordered the deer stew which was fantastic, it literally melted in your mouth, we ordered the rooster stew which initially seemed very winey but it got better and better as you had more, we also ordered the roasted goat which was surprisingly lovely and then the lamb shank which was good too. The vegetable sides were cooked wonderfully, they’re usually always undercooked for me but it was perfect and seasoned perfectly at Tia Bia. The waitresses were lovely and friendly. We ordered dessert too, but the food was definitely the star.
