Most maps sign this stretch as Praia da Rocha Baixinha; locals call it Praia dos Tomates, after the tomato fields that once grew behind the sand. Either way, this is the eastern end of the great Falésia beach: the point where Albufeira’s coast runs up against Vilamoura, the red cliffs have dropped away to low bluffs and dunes, and the sand turns wide, flat and generous.

It’s a beach of space rather than spectacle. The Vilamoura end brings marina traffic, beach service and summer crowds; walk west and the backdrop empties into dune grass and pine, with the rust-red cliffs of Falésia proper building on the horizon. Few Algarve beaches let you choose your level of civilisation so precisely: pick your distance and settle.

When to go: it absorbs summer crowds better than almost anywhere nearby, but mornings are when the flat sand and shallow water do their best work, before the wind gets up and the day fills in.

Who it’s for: families basing in Vilamoura or Olhos de Água, walkers (the full Falésia stretch is one of the Algarve’s great beach walks), and anyone who judges a beach by sand per person rather than drama per metre.
