Praia dos Pescadores

Albufeira’s old town runs downhill until it becomes sand — and that’s Praia dos Pescadores, the beach at the bottom of the whitewashed amphitheatre that made the town’s postcards long before the strip made its reputation. The name remembers the fishing fleet that once hauled out here; these days the hulls have largely given way to sunbeds, pedalos and one of the busiest waterfronts in the Algarve.

Be clear about what this is: a full-service urban resort beach in one of Portugal’s most visited towns. In summer the sand is elbow-to-elbow, the promenade behind is a slow river of people, and quiet is not on the menu. What it offers instead is the setting — broad golden sand walled by ochre cliffs at both ends, with the old town’s stacked white cubes climbing away behind. Seen from the clifftop paths on either side, it still earns the postcard.

When to go: early morning, when the light rakes across the cliffs and the beach belongs to walkers and a few swimmers — or out of season entirely, when the town exhales and the amphitheatre view gets its dignity back.

Who it’s for: first-timers staying in Albufeira, since it’s the town’s front garden; families who want everything within reach; photographers who shoot it from above and then go find somewhere quieter to swim.
