Praia do Peneco

You reach Praia do Peneco by walking through a hole in the town. A pedestrian tunnel cut through the rock from Albufeira’s old town — which is why the beach is also signed as Praia do Túnel — delivers you from whitewashed streets onto open sand in about thirty seconds, and the tunnel mouth framing the bright beach beyond is the picture everyone takes on arrival. Take it anyway; it earns its status honestly.

This is the old town’s front-room beach: the Peneco rock standing over one end, whitewash and terracotta stacked on the slope behind, and in July and August more towels than sand. It is urban, loud in season and completely unpretentious about it. Out of season it flips — winter mornings give you the same tunnel frame, the same golden rock, and almost nobody in either.

When to go: early morning if you want the tunnel empty and the sand unmarked — by mid-morning in summer the procession is constant. Winter is the photographers’ version of this beach.

Who it’s for: anyone staying in the old town — it is the beach at the bottom of the street; photographers who want the tunnel frame and the old-town backdrop; people-watchers, for whom peak season is the feature rather than the bug. If you want space and quiet in July, head to the beaches further out of town.
