Praia dos Olhos de Água

The name means ‘eyes of water’, and it’s literal — at low tide, freshwater springs bubble up through the exposed sand and rock at the shoreline, the olheiros that named the village and once made this a natural stop for fishing families. They’re easy to miss if you don’t know to look, and quietly magic once you do: cold fresh water welling out of a beach.

The beach itself is a compact cove framed in red-gold rock, with the village stacked directly behind and traditional boats still hauled up on the sand between the towels. It’s a working beach and a resort beach at once, and in August the resort side wins — the sand fills wall to wall, and the springs sit under water for much of the day anyway.

When to go: the tide chart matters more than the clock. Aim for low water, when the springs show, the rock platforms emerge, and the cove roughly doubles in usable space. Outside high season it settles back into being a village beach with a long memory.

Who it’s for: families — the village amenities are right there and the cove is sheltered; anyone who likes their beaches with a story; photographers working boats, red rock and the odd spring-fed rivulet in the sand.
