Praia do Submarino is a name you’ll sooner hear from a boat skipper than read on a road sign, one of the unmarked pocket coves along Portimão’s sculpted sandstone coast between Alvor and Praia da Rocha. The name is the kind this coast hands out for a rock’s silhouette, and the place itself is minimal: a sliver of sand between ochre walls, more rock than beach at high water.
It has no facilities and no lifeguards, and it’s the kind of cove people mostly meet from the water, on the kayak and boat runs that work this coast in summer. If you do stand on its sand, the standing warning for this stretch applies in full: the sandstone cliffs are soft, they shed rock, and no one is watching this cove.
Who it’s for: kayak and boat-tour passengers collecting the cove run; completists of Portimão’s rock coast. Casual beach days belong on the serviced sand nearby.
