Praia das Fontainhas

Praia das Fontainhas asks for more effort than beaches with easy car access, and that is part of its character. The cove is small, wild, and held between two cut-looking cliffs, with clear blue water below and pine ground above. More people have found it in recent seasons, partly because boat trips pass along this coast, but it can still feel quieter than the better-known coves nearby.

The beach is not dressed up for visitors. There are no support facilities, no lifeguard watch, no toilets, no bar, and no sunbed setup. Bring what you need and carry it back out. The sand can feel intimate rather than spacious, and that becomes more obvious when the tide rises, especially outside the main summer months, when much of the beach may disappear. Do not sit tight against the cliffs, where falling rock is a real risk.

When to go: morning is the cleanest choice. By the middle of the afternoon, part of the sand falls into shade, and the beach can feel tighter if other people have already arrived. Summer often brings calmer sea here, but it is still an unguarded wild beach, so treat the water and rocks with caution. Shade is limited, so sun protection matters even on a short visit.

Getting in is the practical filter. Most visitors should approach from Praia da Albandeira, then continue through the pine and along the cliffs until the descent to the sand appears on the right when facing the sea. The final path is steep, loose, and can be slippery; proper footwear belongs here, not flip-flops. There is a rough sandy/off-road approach near the beach, but ordinary drivers are better off avoiding the final track and walking in from safer parking.

Who it’s for: photographers and beach walkers who want a compact cove with a raw edge, not a serviced beach day. Pair it with Praia da Albandeira, Arco da Albandeira, or Praia da Estaquinha if you are already exploring this clifftop stretch.
