Ponta Pequena is one of the small, nearly anonymous coves that punctuate Albufeira’s limestone coast: a pocket of sand under carved ochre cliffs, reached on foot rather than signposted, with no facilities and no lifeguards. It sees a fraction of the visitors the serviced beaches either side absorb, and the trade is the usual one on this coast: seclusion for comfort.
Treat it with more caution than the postcode suggests. The cliffs here are soft and undercut (stay well clear of the base and overhangs), and small coves like this can lose most of their sand at high water, so check the tide before you commit. Scout the way down on the ground before carrying gear in.
When to go: calm, low-tide days.
Who it’s for: cove collectors happy to walk a little for sand to themselves, minutes from one of the Algarve’s busiest resort towns.
