Also signed as Praia de Cacela Velha, this is the barrier-island beach that sits across the ria from the hamlet of Fábrica, under the clifftop village of Cacela Velha — and the crossing is what makes it. In season, small boats shuttle passengers over the channel in a few minutes; at low tide, plenty of people simply wade across with their bags held high. Either way you arrive on a bare spit of sand with the Ria Formosa’s warm, still water on one side and the open Atlantic on the other.

There is nothing built out here, which is the entire appeal. Take everything you’ll need and carry it back out. The lagoon side is shallow, warm and calm — the eastern Algarve at its gentlest — while the ocean side gives long, empty walks over banks of broken shell. The famous photograph is actually taken from above: the view from Cacela Velha’s walls, down over the turquoise ribbons of the ria to the white edge of this spit, is one of the region’s defining images.

When to go: tide matters more than hour. Around low water the ria drains into channels and sandbars and the whole landscape rearranges itself; high water brings the swimming. Summer sends a steady flow of boats and people across, but the spit is long enough to absorb it.

Who it’s for: anyone chasing the eastern Algarve’s lagoon light; swimmers who want warm water without waves; walkers happy to carry their own shade.

Photography Notes

  • Shooting Notes
The defining frame is from above — Cacela Velha's clifftop looks down over the ria's turquoise channels to the spit. From the sand itself, work the horizontals: water ribbons, shell banks, walkers in empty space.
