Laranjais de Silves

Every winter, while the coast goes quiet, the countryside around Silves turns into the Algarve’s most underrated photo subject: kilometre after kilometre of orange groves in full fruit, glossy green canopies studded with colour, and the red castle sitting on its hill above them. Silves is the citrus capital of the region — the town celebrates the orange with its own annual fair — and yet almost nobody points a camera at the groves. That’s the opportunity.

The shot has two seasons folded into one. From roughly January the trees carry their full load of fruit — that’s the postcard version, orange on green with the castle or the Monchique hills behind. Then comes the blossom in early spring, when the groves turn white and the scent of orange flower hangs over the valley — less graphic, more atmospheric, worth driving through at least once with the windows down.

When to go: winter through early spring, full stop. By summer the groves are just green trees and the light is harsh. Low winter sun is kind here — it rakes across the valley and lifts the fruit out of the foliage.

A note on manners: these are working farms, not an attraction. Shoot from roadsides and public lanes, stay out of the rows, and pick nothing. The compositions are all available from the verge — a long lens compresses the groves against the castle hill nicely.

Who it’s for: photographers wintering in the Algarve who want something other than empty beaches, and anyone driving inland to Silves or Monchique with a spare hour. It’s a scene, not a site — slow driving and frequent stops beat any single pin.
